Modest Mouse “Sleepwalking” (by AbsintheColour)
The lyrics and the context of the original song are an ironic pairing. The original song was an instrumental that seems perfect for a 1950’s prom. It is hard not to picture demure high school sweethearts slow dancing while listening to the Modest Mouse cover.
I fell in love and
I needed a road map
To find out where you live
So excited now
Sleepwalking
Because I’m sleepwalking
The white trash boys
Listen to the headphones
Blasting white noise
In the convenience store parking lot
I hung around there
Wasting my time
Hoping you’ll stop by
Because I’m sleepwalking
I’m sleepwalking
A mutual friend’s parents
Left town for a week
So we raided their liquor stash
And walked down to the riverside
Sleepwalking
Because I’m sleepwalkingThe lyrics describe earnest and sincere love, but a a modern teenage sort of love tinged with mild unwholesomeness and slackerdom. What makes the cover ironic is that interpreting the dreamy “Sleepwalking” as a love song is intuitive, it is just not the sort of love song you would imagine. The courtship happens through loitering and pining for serendipity at a convenience store, as well as a drunken stroll by the river. Yet this sounds romantic set within the dreamy melody. The moments described are as perfect as slow dances at the prom.
I like this song because the lyrics echo my teenage thoughts, being excited about the next time I would get to see my love, and fantasies of bonding over mild transgressions.

Tina Fey - I Don’t Care If You Like It (Love Letter to Amy Poehler)
Yet another excerpt from Bossypants and because I love Amy Poehler, this is totally appropriate.

I cried. This made me so happy today.
